Great Company for Genomics Professionals
Pros: As a Research Associate at Illumina in San Diego, I've really valued the impactful work in genomics. The collaborative scientific culture is great, and there are good opportunities for career growth and learning new skills in this biotech company.
Cons: Promotion pathways can feel slow, especially for individual contributors. Being a large organization, navigating internal processes sometimes requires patience. Work-life balance occasionally gets challenging during peak project periods.
Advice to Management: Streamline promotion pathways for individual contributors to better reward sustained high performance and innovative contributions, especially in research roles. Continue fostering transparent communication regarding company-wide strategic decisions and process changes.

Work-Life Balance is Okay, Not Great
Pros: The hybrid model helps with flexibility for some. I could often WFH a couple of days a week, which was nice. Benefits are decent for a big biotech company. Health insurance and PTO are pretty standard.
Cons: Work-life balance can suffer when deadlines hit hard. Expect to put in long hours for R&D roles, especially before big data freezes. There's definitely an expectation to be onsite at the San Diego campus for lab work, even with the hybrid option. Sometimes management pushes aggressive timelines without enough resources.
Advice to Management: Try to be more realistic with project timelines and staff adequately. Empower managers to protect their teams' personal time better.

Job security feels pretty shaky right now
Pros: The work in the genomics industry is genuinely interesting. You get to use some serious DNA sequencing tech. Facilities at the San Diego campus are top-notch.
Cons: Recent layoffs have made job security feel really shaky. It's tough as a Research Associate to not know if your role is safe. There's a lot of uncertainty lingering in the air.
Advice to Management: Be more transparent about future plans and what roles are truly secure. Communicate changes better to help reduce employee anxiety.

Job security isn't what it used to be.
Pros: Working at Illumina as a Bioinformatics Scientist was cool for a while. The work in genomics is genuinely impactful, and the team was really smart. It's a big tech company with decent benefits.
Cons: Lately, job security has become a huge concern for many of us. There have been several rounds of layoffs, especially for roles in research and development. It makes you feel pretty uneasy about your future here in San Diego.
Advice to Management: Management needs to be more transparent about the company's financial health and future plans. Communicate better with employees about potential changes to avoid constant fear of layoffs.

Big Biotech, But Job Security Can Be Rough
Pros: The compensation and benefits are really solid for a biotech company. I learned a ton as a Research Scientist here. The facilities are top-notch, especially the onsite labs.
Cons: Layoffs are a real thing, which makes job security pretty tough sometimes, especially if you're in certain R&D roles. You can feel pretty disposable when cuts happen. It's a big corporate environment so things move slowly too.
Advice to Management: Management should be more transparent about potential reorganizations and offer better support/communication during layoff periods. It impacts morale significantly.

Growth is slow for R&D in San Diego
Pros: It's a solid company in the biotechnology industry. You get to work with cutting-edge genomics technology. The teams are generally smart, and the hybrid work setup is decent if you're in the San Diego area.
Cons: Career progression is tough for a Research Associate. There isn't a clear path to move up fast without changing teams or departments. It feels like you hit a ceiling quickly, especially if you're not in management.
Advice to Management: Focus on creating clearer, faster career growth paths for individual contributors, especially for those in R&D roles. It's hard to see what's next for many of us.

Good Benefits, Base Pay Could Use a Boost
Pros: The health benefits are pretty solid, especially for a big biotech company. They offer good PPO plans, which is a plus in the expensive San Diego area. The 401k match is decent too; I appreciate that.
Cons: Base salary as a Research Scientist isn't super competitive compared to other companies in the genomics space. Annual raises feel pretty small, sometimes it's barely keeping up with inflation. It's tough to negotiate higher initially.
Advice to Management: Take a harder look at salary bands for scientists, especially junior to mid-level roles. It'd help a lot with retention against competitors in the life sciences industry.

Solid science, culture can be tough
Pros: The best part is working on cutting-edge genomics projects. You're surrounded by brilliant scientists in the San Diego office. We have a good purpose, that's for sure.
Cons: As a Research Scientist, I've seen the culture struggle with transparency. Sometimes it feels cliquey, and communication from leadership isn't always clear. It's a big corporate company, so change is slow.
Advice to Management: Work on improving internal communication across departments. Encourage more open feedback channels beyond just annual reviews. Foster a more inclusive environment for all, not just senior staff.
