Research Assistant

Decent Flexibility for Research Roles
Pros: As a Research Assistant, I appreciate the hybrid work setup on the Mumbai campus, which helps with focusing on research projects. There's often a degree of autonomy to manage your own time, which is helpful for academic work and attending seminars.
Cons: While there's some flexibility, it's not a truly remote-friendly environment; you're still expected to be present a lot. Getting formal approvals for flexible hours or WFH can be a bit of a bureaucratic maze, which gets frustrating.
Advice to Management: Management should really look into streamlining the remote work policies and making them more consistent across different departments and roles. More trust in employees to manage their schedules would improve overall satisfaction in this academic institution.

IIT Bombay offers good exposure, but slow growth
Pros: Being a Research Assistant here gives you access to cutting-edge research and brilliant minds. You get to work on significant projects in a top academic institution. Great for building your portfolio if you want to pursue further studies or move into R&D in Mumbai.
Cons: Career growth is pretty slow, especially for non-faculty staff. There aren't many structured promotion paths beyond project-based contracts. Securing a permanent staff position can be really tough.
Advice to Management: It would be great to have clearer career progression paths for non-faculty staff. More investment in professional development and internal promotion opportunities could really help with retention.

Solid Job Security for Support Staff
Pros: As a Lab Technician here, the job security is genuinely good. Being part of a large public university, I felt pretty safe from layoffs. It's a very stable environment, especially if you're on a permanent contract.
Cons: However, for some project-based research roles, job security can feel less certain when funding cycles end. Career progression for support staff isn't always clear-cut. The pay can be decent, but it's not the highest out there for an academic institution.
Advice to Management: Please try to create clearer career development paths for non-faculty staff. Also, securing more consistent, long-term funding would really help boost security for all contract employees.
