About Astrobase Space Technologies
Astrobase is a pioneering spacetech startup founded by prominent Senior ISRO scientists and IIT Bombay alumni with over 20 years of experience in designing, manufacturing, testing and flying advanced Cryogenic Launch Vehicles. Driven by a vision to make India a Space tech powerhouse, we are developing innovative launch vehicles that will transform space exploration. At Astrobase, you’ll be part of a team creating history in the Indian space industry. Our goal is to become the first private space company from India to land on the moon economically.
Role Overview
We are building a reusable, all-liquid launcher powered by the best-in-class 80-ton Astrobase FFSC LOX/methane engine, at the fastest pace globally. As Assembly Test Engineer, you will own the configuration, build, and operation of the hydraulic, pneumatic, and cryogenic test infrastructure that proves out every piece of engine and vehicle hardware before it is cleared for integration and flight.
Key Responsibilities
- Test Setup Configuration & Commissioning
- Configure, procure, install, commission, and operate hydraulic (water), pneumatic (GN2/GHe), and cryogenic (LN2) test setups across component, subsystem, and assembly levels.
- Own proof-pressure stands, flow benches, cold-flow loops, rotordynamic rigs, and cryogenic test cells from concept through first-article acceptance.
- Specify and select pressure fittings, tubing, regulators, relief devices, instrumentation, and media supply; define rig P&IDs, operating envelopes, and MAWP.
- Drive procurement and vendor interface for rig hardware; bring each setup through checkout, calibration, and campaign readiness.
- Hardware Test Execution
- Proof-pressure test all hardware — chambers, manifolds, lines, valve bodies, fittings — to qualification/proof factors with full GHe leak verification.
- Flow-test and cdA-characterize control valves, injectors, and metering orifices.
- Cold-flow impellers and rotors; build and run rotordynamic test setups (critical-speed, balance, response surveys).
- LN2 / cryogenic testing of cryo valves and cryogenic pump assemblies — chilldown, functional, leak, and performance.
- Verify cleanliness for oxygen service throughout.
- Setup Ownership, Diagnosis & Maintenance
- Hold end-to-end ownership of test setups: preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Diagnose rig and article-under-test anomalies; lead root cause and corrective action.
- Own GN2, GHe, and water media systems — supply, conditioning, and safe high-pressure / cryogenic handling and venting.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or higher in Mechanical, Aerospace, or a closely related discipline.
- Hands-on experience commissioning and operating proof-pressure, flow, and leak test rigs.
- Strong working knowledge of pressure fittings and their operating principles (AN/JIC flare, cone/conical-seat, compression/Swagelok-type, threaded high-pressure connections), plus regulators and relief sizing.
- Cryogenic test cell experience; prior LIN (liquid nitrogen) test exposure strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with cleanliness standards for oxygen service, GD&T, and torque/tension practice.
- Proven ability to execute in a fast-paced, iterative development environment.
Key Attributes
- Meticulous attention to detail with a first-time-right mindset.
- Equally strong on the test floor and in structured procedure/data documentation.
- Safety-first instincts around high-pressure and cryogenic operations.
- Proactive problem solver who thrives under aggressive timelines.
- Genuine passion for spaceflight and advancing propulsion technology.
