Job Description: Waste Management Supervisor

Position Summary
The Waste Management Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all waste management operations within assigned facilities, ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, and optimizing waste reduction, recycling, and disposal processes. This role serves as the primary liaison between clients, stakeholders, and waste management vendors to deliver cost-effective and environmentally responsible waste solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Management
- Supervise daily waste collection, sorting, recycling, and disposal activities across assigned facilities
- Develop and implement waste management schedules to minimize disruption to building operations
- Monitor waste streams and identify opportunities for waste reduction and diversion
- Ensure proper handling of hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials
Compliance and Regulatory Adherence
- Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal environmental regulations and waste management standards
- Conduct regular audits to ensure adherence to waste handling protocols and safety procedures
- Maintain accurate records and documentation for regulatory reporting requirements
- Stay current on changing environmental legislation and industry best practices
Client and Stakeholder Coordination
- Serve as primary point of contact for clients regarding waste management services and concerns
- Collaborate with building occupants, property managers, and facility teams to address waste management needs
- Communicate regularly with stakeholders on program performance, goals, and improvement initiatives
- Facilitate meetings and provide updates on waste diversion rates, cost savings, and sustainability metrics
Vendor and Contract Management
- Manage relationships with waste haulers, recycling vendors, and disposal service providers
- Negotiate contracts and service agreements to optimize cost and service quality
- Monitor vendor performance and ensure service level agreements are met
- Evaluate and recommend new vendors or service improvements as needed
Team Leadership
- Supervise and train waste management staff and janitorial teams on proper waste handling procedures
- Conduct safety training and ensure team compliance with health and safety protocols
- Schedule staff assignments and oversee performance to maintain service standards
Sustainability and Efficiency
- Develop and implement waste reduction and recycling programs to support sustainability goals
- Track and report on waste diversion metrics, recycling rates, and environmental impact
- Identify cost-saving opportunities through waste stream optimization
- Promote environmental awareness and waste reduction initiatives among building occupants
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Facilities Management, or related field preferred
- 3-5 years of experience in waste management, facilities operations, or environmental services
- Knowledge of waste management regulations, recycling processes, and disposal methods
- Strong understanding of safety protocols and hazardous materials handling
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
- Proven ability to manage vendors and service contracts
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and facility management software
Preferred:
- Certification in Hazardous Materials Management or Environmental Health and Safety
- LEED AP or sustainability-related certification
- Experience in commercial or corporate facilities environment
- Supervisory or team leadership experience
