Hybrid Model is Okay, but Onsite is Key
Pros: For Software Engineer roles, the hybrid work model is pretty good. You get some flexibility with 2-3 days remote. It helps with the commute in Sunnyvale, CA, which is nice.
Cons: But honestly, the onsite requirements are pretty strict. We're in the medical device industry, so I get it, but it limits real work flexibility. You can't really choose your onsite days sometimes, which feels a bit old school for a big tech company.
Advice to Management: Maybe re-evaluate the strict onsite policy for roles that don't absolutely require it. More flexibility could really boost morale for the software engineer teams.

Good Pay, Slow Career Path in Robotics Surgery
Pros: I like the stable work in the robotics surgery field. The pay and benefits for a Software Engineer are pretty decent, especially in the Sunnyvale office. You learn a lot technically, but it's often deep dives rather than broad experience.
Cons: Career growth here is definitely slow for technical roles. It's hard to move up quickly, and there aren't many clear paths or mentorship programs to guide you. You often feel stuck in your current level for a long time.
Advice to Management: Management should invest more in clear career progression frameworks and provide better mentorship opportunities for employees. Make it easier for people in engineering roles to see a path forward.

Stable, but career growth can be tough
Pros: Job security is really good at Intuitive, especially as a Software Engineer. The company's a leader in robotics surgery, so it's not going anywhere. You feel pretty safe in your role, working out of the Sunnyvale office.
Cons: While job security is solid, moving up the ladder feels super slow sometimes. There aren't always clear paths for career progression here. It can also feel a bit corporate and bureaucratic, which isn't always fun for technical roles.
Advice to Management: Please try to create clearer paths for career growth, especially for long-term individual contributors. Less bureaucracy would definitely help engineers stay engaged and innovate faster.

Work-life is okay, depends on team
Pros: I liked the hybrid work model; it gave me some flexibility. My direct team, working on surgical robotics software, was pretty good about respecting personal time. We usually didn't have to stay super late in the Sunnyvale office.
Cons: Some Software Engineer roles definitely push people to work more. Project deadlines for new medical device products can get intense, meaning longer hours. It's not always easy to completely disconnect.
Advice to Management: Standardize work-life expectations across departments. Don't let certain teams burn out when developing new surgical systems.

Stable place to grow, especially for engineers.
Pros: As a Software Engineer, I felt pretty secure here. The medical device industry is super stable, and Intuitive is a big player in Sunnyvale, CA. They offer solid benefits and it's a generally respected corporate environment.
Cons: Things can move a bit slow sometimes, which can be frustrating. There's a fair amount of red tape, as expected in a large company. Some teams had better management than others.
Advice to Management: Try to streamline some processes to reduce the bureaucratic feel. Empower teams more to make quicker decisions.

Decent Culture, Some Areas Need Work
Pros: I've met some really smart, dedicated people here at Intuitive. Everyone genuinely believes in the mission of improving healthcare with our surgical systems. As a Software Engineer, I appreciate the stable environment in medical robotics, knowing our work truly matters.
Cons: The culture can feel a bit corporate and slow to adapt sometimes, especially in the Sunnyvale office. The hybrid work setup isn't always flexible, which can be tough when you need it. There's not always a lot of room for new ideas if they challenge established ways.
Advice to Management: Try to encourage more flexibility within the hybrid model. Really listen to what teams need and be open to changing existing processes. A bit more agility would go a long way.

Solid Pay, but Benefits Need a Look
Pros: As a Software Engineer, the base salary is quite competitive, especially for big tech in Sunnyvale, CA. The 401k match is pretty solid too, which is a big plus.
Cons: However, I've found that the healthcare benefits aren't as robust as other medical device companies. The PTO accrual feels a bit slow compared to industry standards, especially for more senior roles.
Advice to Management: Please re-evaluate the healthcare options and consider increasing the PTO accrual rate to be more competitive.

Decent place, but watch the hours
Pros: I've learned so much about medical robotics here, it's pretty impressive technology. The Sunnyvale office is great, and as a Software Engineer, the pay and benefits are really competitive for a big corporate company. You get to work on cutting-edge surgical systems.
Cons: The work-life balance can be tough, though. It's common to work long hours, especially when deadlines for new surgical systems are looming. The hybrid model means you're in the office most days, which doesn't leave much room for personal stuff.
Advice to Management: Management should really focus on managing project scope better. It's not fair to expect constant overtime for all teams, especially those working on critical surgical systems.

Okay for engineers, but slow career growth
Pros: It's a very stable company in the medical device industry. You'll learn a ton about robotics and surgical systems. As a Software Engineer, the work itself is often complex and engaging.
Cons: Career growth just feels super slow here. Promotions for engineering roles are really infrequent and not always transparent. It's easy to feel stuck after a few years in the Sunnyvale office.
Advice to Management: Please create clearer, more consistent promotion paths for engineers. Invest in professional development programs to help employees advance their careers within the company.

Career growth is okay, but you need to push it.
Pros: The pay and benefits are pretty good for the medical device industry. You get to work on cutting-edge robotic surgery tech, which is a big plus for a software engineer. My team was collaborative, and there's a strong mission here.
Cons: Career growth felt slow sometimes. There aren't many clear paths upward for software engineering roles unless you're super proactive. Getting promoted can be tough without a lot of self-promotion in this big corporate environment.
Advice to Management: Establish clearer career ladders for software engineering roles. Empower managers to proactively support employee growth instead of relying solely on self-advocacy. This would boost morale and retain talent in the competitive healthcare technology sector.
