Good Research, But Career Path Not Always Clear
Pros: As a Research Scientist here, you get access to really good equipment and a solid network in the R&D sector. There are plenty of opportunities to pick up new technical skills and work on interesting projects in the Singapore office. It's great for building a strong foundation if you're fresh out of school.
Cons: Career growth is pretty slow, especially once you're past the initial few years. It can be tough to get promoted without switching departments, and there isn't a super clear path for advancement as a dedicated researcher. You might feel stuck without a defined progression ladder in this government agency.
Advice to Management: Management should really focus on creating clearer career progression frameworks for research roles. More transparency on what it takes to get promoted would help a lot with retention in this government agency.

Leadership Is a Mixed Bag for Researchers
Pros: I loved the advanced facilities available for a research engineer in Singapore. It's a solid place for learning new techniques in public sector research. The stability of a government agency is also a plus.
Cons: Leadership can be inconsistent across different institutes. My direct manager was decent, but upper management's vision often felt unclear. This made project planning tough, especially for us working on site daily.
Advice to Management: Work on leadership training programs for principal investigators and group leaders. Clearer communication of strategic goals from the top down would help everyone, especially research engineers, feel more aligned.

Leadership needs to step up at A*STAR
Pros: The facilities for science and engineering research are generally top-notch, which is a huge plus for any Research Scientist in the public sector. You get access to some pretty advanced equipment and can collaborate on interesting projects within the Singapore science community.
Cons: Leadership can be really disconnected from the ground-level work. There's a lot of bureaucracy, making quick decisions tough, especially for ongoing R&D projects. It sometimes feels like higher-ups don't really understand our day-to-day challenges.
Advice to Management: Try to be more present and listen to the concerns of the Research Scientist teams. Streamline decision-making processes for public sector R&D projects and foster a more open environment.

Pretty Solid Flexibility for Research Work
Pros: As a Research Engineer here, I've had decent hybrid work options. It's usually fine to adjust my schedule if I need to run errands or have appointments. This flexibility is a big plus in a public sector research setting.
Cons: The actual flexibility can really depend on your Principal Investigator. Some PIs expect you onsite more often than others, which can make consistent WFH tricky. It's not always uniform across different scientific research labs.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize the flexible work policies across all institutes and labs. It would help ensure everyone gets similar opportunities for hybrid work.

Solid place for research, but leadership can be tricky.
Pros: As a research scientist, you get access to really good labs and resources. It's a stable job within the Singapore public sector. They invest a lot in biomedical sciences, which is great for project work.
Cons: Leadership can be slow to make decisions, which is tough in a large organization like this. There's sometimes a lot of bureaucracy for new government research projects. Advancement isn't always clear for all roles, especially non-PI track staff.
Advice to Management: Work on faster decision-making processes. Make career paths clearer for non-PI track staff. Empower team leads more to streamline operations.

Okay flexibility, depends on your research
Pros: The hybrid work model is a big plus for a Research Scientist when you're not tied to the lab. I could often work from home a couple of days a week for data analysis or writing, which helps a ton with work-life balance. It's good for project management tasks.
Cons: If your scientific research involves heavy lab work or specific equipment, full remote isn't really an option. You still need to be in the Singapore office quite a bit for experiments, which can be tough. It's not truly flexible for all research roles.
Advice to Management: Consider clearer guidelines for remote work possibilities for different types of research, especially for those in engineering research or computational fields with less direct lab dependency. It would help manage expectations.

Leadership is hit or miss here
Pros: It's a solid place for public sector research, especially in the biomedical sciences field in Singapore. As a Research Fellow, you get access to great facilities and resources. Some principal investigators are truly supportive and really know their science.
Cons: Leadership can be inconsistent across departments. There's not always clear direction for science research roles, making career progression feel a bit murky. Communication from top management sometimes feels detached, especially regarding project changes.
Advice to Management: Focus on developing middle management. More training on clear project planning and team communication would help immensely for Research Fellows.

Work-life balance is okay for research
Pros: For a government agency in Singapore, the work-life balance as a Research Engineer isn't terrible. You generally get stable hours most weeks. There's some decent support for public sector employees, which helps.
Cons: It's not always easy though; project deadlines can make things tough. Sometimes you're doing weekend lab work if experiments run long. True remote work isn't really an option for onsite research roles.
Advice to Management: Try to manage project timelines better to prevent those last-minute rushes. More support for peak periods would be appreciated by your Research Engineers.

Solid place for research, but watch contracts
Pros: The job security for most research roles here is generally quite decent, especially compared to private sector biotech startups. Being part of a government agency means less volatility and good funding for major scientific projects. It's a stable environment for long-term research plans.
Cons: The biggest con for job security is the contract nature of many positions, particularly for Research Fellows in biomedical research. While renewals are common, you still have that looming deadline and the pressure to secure grants. It's not the 'job for life' kind of security some might expect.
Advice to Management: Consider clearer paths for permanent roles for long-serving, productive contract staff. It would help retain talent and reduce the anxiety around constant contract renewals.

Work-Life Balance is Okay, But Can Get Intense
Pros: I like that as a Research Scientist, you get pretty good autonomy over your schedule sometimes. There's potential for some work from home flexibility if your lab work allows, which helps a lot in the Singapore office.
Cons: Honestly, it's easy to get sucked into long hours, especially when deadlines for scientific projects hit. Weekends can often be dedicated to finishing up experiments or writing papers, which isn't ideal for work-life balance.
Advice to Management: Management should really look into better resource allocation for scientific projects to ease the pressure on researchers and promote healthier work boundaries.
