Field Engineer Life: Rewarding But Long Hours
Pros: The pay for a Field Engineer here is solid, especially for the oil and gas industry. You gain really good hands-on experience with subsea equipment, which is a huge plus for career growth. The teams you work with onsite are usually supportive and knowledgeable.
Cons: Work-life balance can be really tough though. As a Field Engineer, you'll be on the road a lot, away from the Aberdeen office. Expect to put in long weeks; 40-hour weeks are rare, it's more like 50-60 regularly, which impacts personal time.
Advice to Management: Try to staff projects better to reduce the constant overtime for Field Engineers. More predictable schedules would help a lot with retention.

Leadership has some good points, but needs work
Pros: Some senior leaders really know their stuff, especially in subsea engineering and drilling equipment. They're usually good at giving technical guidance. You get a lot of autonomy in your onsite role when you're out in the field.
Cons: The day-to-day management can be tough. There's not enough clarity from some managers, especially regarding project priorities. Communication from the top down could really use improvement for this mid-sized engineering company.
Advice to Management: Focus on consistent communication across all levels. Invest in proper management training for project leads so they can better support field staff and improve clarity for engineering teams.

Decent Job Security, Market Dependent
Pros: Job security as a Field Engineer is generally decent, especially if you're good at your job. Claxton Engineering has a solid client base for offshore projects in the subsea tools sector, which keeps things moving. I always had work, even if it meant being away a lot.
Cons: That job security can feel a bit like a rollercoaster with the oil and gas industry's ups and downs. When the market dipped, there was definitely a worry about future contracts. It wasn't always clear how secure things were long-term for some roles.
Advice to Management: Try to communicate more clearly about the company's long-term strategy, especially during market downturns. Transparency around future project pipelines would really help employee morale and reduce anxiety about job security.

Decent Engineering Firm, Tough on Balance
Pros: The team here is really supportive. You get to work on some interesting subsea engineering projects. There are good opportunities to learn and grow as a Project Engineer.
Cons: The work-life balance isn't great. Expect to pull 50+ hour weeks often, especially during project crunch times. Being onsite in the Aberdeen office is mostly required, so flexibility is low.
Advice to Management: Try to staff projects more realistically or manage client expectations better. High workload really impacts employee morale.

Leadership is Okay, Needs More Consistency
Pros: Some team leads are genuinely supportive and understand the technical challenges. You get solid experience working on complex offshore projects. The pay and benefits are quite competitive for subsea engineering roles.
Cons: There's a real lack of consistent direction from upper leadership. Decisions sometimes feel slow or get reversed without clear reasons. It's tough when you're managing critical project timelines. The onsite team in Aberdeen could use more direct management support.
Advice to Management: Senior leadership needs to work on consistent communication. Empower project managers more to make decisions. Provide better support and clear goals for the teams, especially for those working onsite.
