Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay is Singapore’s national performing arts centre and one of the busiest arts centres in the world. Since its opening in 2002, the centre has presented more than 53,000 performances and activities, drawing 34 million patrons and 116 million visitors. This architectural icon, with its distinctive twin shells, houses world-class performance spaces complemented by a comprehensive range of professional support services. Its two main venues are the 1,600-seat Concert Hall and a Theatre with a capacity of 2,000.

Esplanade’s vision is to be a performing arts centre for everyone and it seeks to enrich the lives of its community through the arts. The centre’s programming is guided by its mission – to entertain, engage, educate and inspire. Its year-long arts calendar of about 3,000 performances presented by Esplanade, its collaboration partners and hirers cater to diverse audiences in Singapore and span different cultures, languages and genres including dance, music, theatre, visual arts and more. More than 70% of the shows that take place each year at the centre are non-ticketed.

Esplanade regularly presents world-renowned companies and artists that attract international attention and add to Singapore’s cultural vibrancy. The centre is also a popular performance home for arts groups and commercial presenters who hire its venues to stage a wide range of programmes. These carefully curated presentations complement Esplanade’s own diverse offerings for audiences.

Esplanade works in close partnership with local, regional and international artists to develop artistic capabilities, push artistic boundaries and engage audiences. The centre supports the creation of artistic content and develops technical capabilities for the industry nationally.

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay is operated by The Esplanade Co Ltd, which is a not-for-profit organisation, a registered Charity and an Institution of a Public Character.

Event Coordinator

Event Coordinator role, some long days
Pros: It's a solid place if you love the performing arts industry in Singapore. You get to work on so many cool shows and learn a ton about venue management. The team generally has a good vibe.
Cons: Work-life balance here is okay, but it gets tough, especially as an Event Coordinator during peak seasons. Expect some long onsite hours when big events are running. It's not a 9-to-5 always.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage the workload for event teams during high-volume periods. More support or clearer boundaries could really help with burnout.

Tough to find real flexibility in this performing arts role
Pros: It's cool being part of Singapore's arts scene. For some administrative tasks, there's a bit of leeway with start times, which helps balance things out on non-event days. Colleagues in the cultural institution are usually pretty understanding.
Cons: As a Programme Coordinator, I worked a lot of nights and weekends for events. True work-from-home options are pretty rare for my role; you really need to be onsite. It's hard to maintain a decent work-life balance here.
Advice to Management: Consider more structured compensatory time off for weekend work, or explore hybrid options for roles that don't always need to be physically present. Acknowledge the demanding hours for performing arts staff.
