Okay benefits, but salary could be better

Spent a few years here as a Customer Service Officer. It's a big corporate bank in the financial services sector, so there are some perks, but the actual take-home pay for retail banking roles feels low.

Pros

The health insurance is pretty solid for an onsite role. We get a decent annual bonus if the bank hits its targets, which is nice. For the Lagos office, the transport allowance helps a bit.

Cons

Base salary for entry to mid-level positions isn't competitive, especially in retail banking roles. It's tough to get a significant raise, even with good performance. You'll find better pay in other financial services firms.

Advice to Management

Look at the compensation structure for junior and mid-level staff. It's hard to retain good talent when the pay isn't great compared to the market, especially for critical banking operations roles.

Solid Place, Culture Needs Some Tweaks
Pros: The collaborative spirit among colleagues is a big plus; everyone generally helps each other out. It's a solid place to learn the ropes in the banking industry, especially for entry-level roles like a Relationship Manager. You get good exposure to different aspects of finance.
Cons: The corporate culture can feel very hierarchical, making it tough to innovate or get new ideas approved quickly. There's a lot of red tape, which sometimes slows down even simple tasks. It often feels like management prioritizes process over people, impacting overall morale for some teams in the Lagos office.
Advice to Management: Work on making the culture more agile and less bureaucratic. Empower teams to make decisions faster and truly listen to employee feedback to boost morale across all departments. Focus on the human element as much as the financial targets.

Standard Corporate Bank, Little Flexibility
Pros: You get decent benefits working for a big corporate bank like Access Bank Plc. The team in the Lagos office is generally supportive, which helps with daily onsite work. It's a stable company in the financial services industry.
Cons: Work flexibility isn't really a thing here for us banking professionals. As a Relationship Manager, it's strictly onsite, no real remote work options. That makes work-life balance pretty challenging, especially with longer hours.
Advice to Management: Management should really look into hybrid models or offering some WFH days. It would boost morale and help with talent retention for banking professionals.

Leadership has its ups and downs here
Pros: You can learn a lot from your direct team leads. As a financial analyst in corporate banking, I've had some really smart colleagues who were great mentors. The training programs for new hires are decent too, which is a plus for career starters.
Cons: Upper leadership often feels out of touch. Decisions come from the top without much input or explanation, which can be frustrating. There isn't enough transparency from senior management on strategic changes affecting project teams.
Advice to Management: Bridge the gap between executive leadership and the operational teams. More open communication and understanding of daily challenges would significantly boost morale and project success.
