Company Reviews

Family has always been at the heart of Eckerd Connects. When we were founded in 1968 by Jack and Ruth Eckerd, the legendary power couple was often asked what motivated them to start a non-profit in rural Florida. Their answer was always the same, “It’s the kids.”

Today those words still hold true – but much like other families, ours has grown. Over five decades later with a presence in 20 states and the District of Columbia, our family of services has expanded to include Job Corps, workforce development, aid for the homeless, transitional services for troubled youth, prevention services, and so much more.

Work-life balance is okay, but tough
Pros: You really feel like you're helping people here, especially in youth programs. The team in the Tampa, FL office is super supportive, which helps a lot. It's rewarding work if you care about the non-profit sector.
Cons: Work-life balance as a Case Manager is often really tough; you're on call a lot. It's hard to switch off completely when you're dealing with family services. Expect more than 40-hour weeks regularly.
Advice to Management: Try to find ways to reduce caseloads for Case Managers. More support staff or clearer boundaries for off-hours could really help prevent burnout in this demanding non-profit sector role.

Okay Benefits, But Pay Could Be Better
Pros: As a Youth Counselor, the health insurance was actually decent, which isn't always a given in the non-profit sector. PTO accrual was okay, not great, but it felt pretty solid for the amount of time I was there.
Cons: The salary for social work roles, especially as a Youth Counselor, was pretty low for the Tampa Bay area. It felt like they expected passion to make up for less competitive pay, which makes it hard to stay long-term in the social work field.
Advice to Management: Seriously re-evaluate the pay scales for direct service staff like Youth Counselors. It's hard to retain good talent with current salaries, even for mission-driven work. Invest more in competitive compensation for the front-line.
