Decent Benefits, But Pay Could Be Better
Pros: I really appreciated the staff discount, it helps a lot with groceries, especially as a Customer Assistant. There's also a solid pension scheme for a major retailer. The annual leave entitlement is pretty standard, too.
Cons: The hourly wage, even for long-term Customer Assistants, doesn't feel competitive for living in Manchester. It's tough to get significant pay raises, even with good performance. Feels like entry-level pay for most retail roles.
Advice to Management: Look at making hourly wages more competitive, especially for experienced staff. Retention would improve if pay reflected commitment.

Okay for part-time, tough otherwise
Pros: If you're looking for part-time work, especially student roles, the flexible shifts at our Manchester store are pretty good. You can usually swap shifts with other Customer Assistants if something comes up, which is a big plus for work-life balance.
Cons: Full-time hours as a Customer Assistant are brutal; you often work late shifts and early mornings back-to-back in this fast-paced retail environment. It's hard to plan anything social with the constantly changing schedule, making it tough to maintain a good personal life.
Advice to Management: Try to offer more stable shift patterns for full-time Customer Assistants to improve their quality of life. Consistent scheduling would really help morale across the store.

Tesco Work-Life Balance: It's Okay
Pros: I liked that as a Store Assistant, I could often get a good handle on my schedule. The rotas usually come out weeks in advance, and if you need to swap a shift, most colleagues in the retail industry are pretty understanding. There's decent holiday allowance too.
Cons: The biggest issue is the staffing levels; we were often short-staffed, which meant more pressure during shifts. Weekend shifts are pretty common, and it's hard to avoid late finishes sometimes. It definitely impacts personal time.
Advice to Management: Try to improve staffing levels, especially on busy days and weekends, to ease the pressure on Store Assistants. More support for those trying to get consistent days off would also really help.
