Electro Optic Systems (EOS), an ASX-listed Australian-owned technology and manufacturing company, has been at the forefront of the defence and space sectors for over 40 years.
EOS' core capabilities include bespoke optical and laser assemblies, thermal imagers, day cameras, gimbal units, laser rangefinders, and precision mechanisms. EOS owns all intellectual property and employs vertical design to ensure effective long-term obsolescence management. This longstanding expertise enables us to bring new and innovative technologies to market.
EOS operates in two divisions:
Defence Systems Specialises in advanced technology for weapon systems optimisation and integration, as well as Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance solutions for land warfare. The division focuses on developing robotic and autonomous systems, with an emphasis on the long-distance remote control of precision lethality for future warfighting. Key products include next-generation Remote Weapon Systems (RWS), vehicle turrets, Counter-Uncrewed Aerial Systems (C-UAS), and lethality systems for remote and autonomous platforms.
Space Systems Delivers world-leading electro-optic equipment, systems, and facilities for space domain awareness (SDA), space surveillance, space control, and communications—trusted by international space agencies, satellite operators, and defence organisations. Capabilities include laser beam director telescopes, high-powered laser systems, enhanced imaging systems, fully autonomous software controls, and software for optical ground station networks and SDA services. Our day/night passive and active (laser) tracking spans Low Earth Orbit to Geostationary and Cis-Lunar Orbits.

Pros: It's a really stable gig, which is nice. You definitely get exposed to interesting optics technology and defense engineering projects, especially as a new Software Engineer. There's good job security here, being a defense contractor.
Cons: The biggest drawback for me is the lack of clear career progression. It feels like career growth for technical roles really slows down after a couple of years. There aren't many chances to step up, and mentorship isn't structured well.
Advice to Management: Management needs to create clearer promotion paths, especially for engineers. More structured mentorship could really help people grow faster within the company.

Pros: The base salary for a Software Engineer here is pretty competitive, especially for the defense industry in Canberra. They do offer decent health insurance options, which is a big plus. You're paid on time, no issues there.
Cons: Bonus structure isn't very clear, and often feels pretty low. Don't expect huge annual payouts. The retirement matching is kind of weak compared to other mid-sized companies I've seen. Paid time off accrual feels a bit slow, it's tough to build up a lot of leave quickly.
Advice to Management: Review the bonus program and retirement matching. It'd really help with retention for folks in technical roles. More flexibility with work arrangements would also be a huge morale booster, especially since most work is still onsite work.

Pros: You get to work on some really interesting optical systems and space technologies projects. The onsite work in Canberra offers great hands-on experience if you're passionate about the defense industry.
Cons: Leadership is just inconsistent, honestly. There's no clear strategic vision from senior management, which makes it hard for someone like me, an Optical Engineer, to see my career path here. Communication is often poor.
Advice to Management: Please, just be clearer with the company's strategic vision. Employees need consistent communication from the top to feel invested and understand their role in the bigger picture.
