Network Engineer

Okay for a big company, depends on your team
Pros: The `hybrid model` is great; it's not super rigid, which helps with personal appointments and family stuff. As a `Network Engineer` here, I've had some really understanding managers. There's good exposure to various `IT infrastructure` technologies, so you're always learning.
Cons: Work-life balance can be a real struggle, especially when projects are hot. Some weeks I'm definitely pushing past `40 hours`, and it feels like the workload isn't evenly distributed. It's a `corporate` environment, so things can sometimes move slow, which adds stress when you have tight deadlines.
Advice to Management: Try to standardize workload expectations and project planning across different `IT infrastructure` teams. It feels like some `Network Engineers` are consistently swamped while others have it easier. Better resource management would make a huge difference for work-life balance.

Okay flexibility, but room for improvement
Pros: I appreciate the option for a hybrid model; I'm in the Pittsburgh office 3 days a week. For Network Engineer roles, it's good to have some WFH days to focus on deep work and avoid the commute.
Cons: Work flexibility isn't great if you're not local. They're pretty strict about the hybrid schedule, and it's tough to get full remote approval. There's not much wiggle room on start/end times either, which can be a pain for personal appointments.
Advice to Management: Consider offering more fully remote positions, especially for experienced IT support roles. Being more flexible with daily schedules would also help a lot.

Okay for starting out in IT, not much growth
Pros: You'll learn a ton, especially with network solutions. Projects are super varied, which is good for your resume if you're an entry-level Network Engineer. It's solid for getting your foot in the IT services door.
Cons: Honestly, career growth is pretty slow here. There aren't many opportunities to move up, and pay bumps are just okay. It feels like you hit a ceiling fast as a Network Engineer in this corporate environment.
Advice to Management: Maybe try to build clearer career paths. Folks want to see how they can grow past their initial role, especially in the telecom industry. Invest more in professional development programs.

Black Box: Solid but culture could use a refresh
Pros: The job security is pretty good here. For an IT solutions provider, Black Box offers a stable career path. Benefits are decent, especially the health coverage.
Cons: Company culture feels a bit old-school, not very dynamic. There isn't much room to bring new ideas forward as a Network Engineer. It's a very top-down corporate environment.
Advice to Management: Try to foster more innovation and listen to junior staff ideas. A bit more transparency wouldn't hurt either.
