Operations Engineer

Work flexibility depends heavily on your role here
Pros: Some departments in the Calgary office offer a decent hybrid work arrangement. If you're in a more corporate role, you might get 2-3 days WFH which is pretty good. The benefits package is solid for the energy sector.
Cons: For field roles or us operations engineers, the flexibility just isn't there. It's mostly an onsite setup, standard 8-5, which makes work-life balance tough. There's not much room for changing hours, even for a hybrid model.
Advice to Management: Consider more flexible scheduling options for essential onsite operational roles, even if it's just compressed work weeks. It would really help with employee morale in the oil and gas industry.

Growth is Possible, But You Need to Push
Pros: It's a huge corporate environment, so there are definitely chances to move around if you look for them. For Process Engineer roles, you can get exposure to different refinery operations. The internal training budget is decent if you know how to access it.
Cons: Career growth isn't always clear or well-structured. As a Process Engineer, I often felt like I had to build my own path. Promotions for technical roles can be really slow sometimes, and mentorship isn't consistently available.
Advice to Management: Establish clearer career progression paths and offer more proactive mentorship for employees, especially those in specialized technical roles within the oil and gas industry. Make internal mobility feel less like a scavenger hunt.

Process Operator

Pay is good, benefits are just okay
Pros: The base pay for Process Operator roles in the oil & gas industry is pretty competitive, especially here at the Fort McMurray site. You get a decent annual bonus if the company performs. The overall compensation package is solid enough to live comfortably.
Cons: However, the health and dental benefits really aren't that great compared to other big energy companies. I feel like the retirement matching could definitely be improved too. It's not the best deal for long-term financial planning.
Advice to Management: Review the health and dental benefits packages; they're falling behind competitors in the oil and gas sector. Improve retirement matching to attract and retain top talent.

Solid pay, but corporate culture is tough
Pros: The pay and benefits for Field Operations Technicians are pretty good, especially for the oil and gas industry. There's good job security within this large corporate environment. You can count on steady work.
Cons: The company culture feels really hierarchical and slow to change. Innovation isn't really encouraged from the bottom up. It can be tough to feel heard or make an impact beyond your immediate tasks.
Advice to Management: Try to empower frontline employees more and create a culture where feedback is truly valued and acted upon, not just collected.

Project Manager

Okay Work-Life, Depends on Your Project
Pros: The pay is solid, which helps make long hours worth it sometimes. As a Project Manager, you get to work on big, impactful projects in the oil and gas industry. When a project isn't in a crunch, 40-hour weeks are doable.
Cons: Work-life balance can tank during project deadlines. It's tough to plan personal stuff when you're in the middle of a big push. The corporate structure means a lot of meetings, which can eat into your actual work time.
Advice to Management: Try to better manage project loads to avoid constant crunch times. Empower teams more and reduce unnecessary meetings to boost efficiency.
