Junior Data Scientist

Base pay is fine, total comp could improve

It's a mixed bag here, especially when you look at compensation. As a Junior Data Scientist, I felt like the overall package wasn't super competitive.

Pros

The base salary for a Junior Data Scientist working remote from Austin is actually pretty decent. Health insurance benefits are solid, and they cover a good chunk of the premiums.

Cons

Where it falls short is the total compensation. Bonuses are super small, basically non-existent, and the stock options package isn't competitive for big tech. In the broader SaaS industry, you'd get more elsewhere.

Advice to Management

Seriously re-evaluate the bonus structure and stock options, especially for tech roles. It's tough to attract and keep top talent when the total compensation isn't competitive.

Great Place for Learning and Flexible Work
Pros: I really like working here as a Software Engineer. My colleagues are super supportive and it's a very collaborative environment, which makes learning new things easy in the tech industry. The hybrid work model is awesome, giving me good flexibility for my personal life while still connecting with the team. There are solid learning opportunities.
Cons: The promotion process could be clearer and faster; sometimes it feels like career advancement is a bit slow. Also, some internal approval processes can sometimes drag, which slows down project timelines a little.
Advice to Management: Streamline the promotion process and make career progression pathways more transparent. Review and optimize internal approval workflows to improve project velocity.

Leadership is a Mixed Bag Here
Pros: Some of the direct managers are genuinely supportive, which is great for a Software Engineer finding their footing. There's good remote work flexibility too, making WFH easier to manage for many.
Cons: Upper management in this big tech company can feel pretty disconnected from the day-to-day. It's tough to get clear strategic direction sometimes, which hurts project momentum for tech projects.
Advice to Management: Senior leadership needs to improve communication channels and provide clearer strategic goals. Listen more to the teams on the ground, especially in the Seattle office.

Work-life balance is okay, but it's a grind
Pros: The hybrid model is a plus; I only go into the Austin, TX office a couple days a week. It's nice to have that flexibility. My team is pretty collaborative, which helps when project deadlines get tight.
Cons: Work-life balance can be tough for us in software development, especially close to release dates. Expect to put in more than 40-hour weeks often. It's hard to really disconnect sometimes, even with the hybrid setup.
Advice to Management: Try to manage project timelines more realistically for engineering roles. Burnout is a real concern when we're constantly pushing for those tight deadlines.
