Great place for AI innovation and career growth
Pros: Working at Graphcore, a deep tech company in the AI hardware industry, has been a really positive experience. I've been a Software Engineer here in Bristol, UK, and the chance to work on cutting-edge technology is incredible. The teams are packed with super smart people, and it's a truly collaborative environment. I've learned so much, which is great for career development. Plus, the work flexibility, especially with hybrid options, really helps manage life outside of work.
Cons: Sometimes the strategic direction feels a bit less clear, which can lead to project shifts and re-prioritizing work on short notice. Internal communication about these broader shifts could definitely improve. Also, while there are lots of learning opportunities, the path for formal promotions feels a bit slow or opaque sometimes. It's typical for a fast-paced environment, but it's something that could be clearer for us.
Advice to Management: Focus on clearer, more consistent communication regarding long-term strategic goals to help teams prioritize effectively. Also, establishing more transparent and structured pathways for career progression would be beneficial for employee development.

Pay is okay, benefits need work
Pros: The base salary for a Software Engineer felt fair, especially for a startup in the AI accelerators space. You get stock options, which is common in chip design, though their value is uncertain. The private health insurance was a solid perk.
Cons: The stock options take a long time to vest, which isn't ideal for a fast-paced startup. The bonus potential was pretty low, and it felt like pay raises weren't keeping up with inflation or industry standards for machine learning engineers. Other benefits weren't super competitive.
Advice to Management: Management should really look at improving the overall benefits package, not just the base salary. Better bonus structures and faster vesting for stock options could really help attract and retain top talent for these critical AI hardware roles.

Pay and Benefits Are Just Okay
Pros: The pension scheme is pretty solid, better than some other startups. You get good private healthcare too, which is a nice perk in the UK. For a company in the AI hardware space, the stock options were a potential upside.
Cons: Salaries, especially for software engineer roles in the Bristol office, felt a bit below market rate when compared to larger tech companies. I've seen better base pay for similar AI chip development roles. It can be tough to negotiate salary increases.
Advice to Management: Consider reviewing the base salary ranges for key engineering roles to stay competitive. It's tough to attract and retain top talent in the AI semiconductor industry if pay isn't aligned with market rates.
