Great Place for AI Software Engineers to Learn
Pros: Working as a Software Engineer in the AI hardware industry at Graphcore has been a fantastic learning experience. The Bristol team is incredibly smart, collaborative, and supportive, making it easy to learn and grow. I appreciate the flexible hybrid work model, which helps with work-life balance. The innovative technology and challenging projects are genuinely exciting.
Cons: The fast-paced environment means occasional periods are very demanding. While technical growth is great, formal career progression can feel slower than at more mature companies. Some internal processes are still being refined.
Advice to Management: Continue to focus on formalizing career progression paths and streamlining some of the internal processes as the company scales. Consistent communication on these areas would be beneficial.

Great place for AI innovation and career growth
Pros: Working at Graphcore, a deep tech company in the AI hardware industry, has been a really positive experience. I've been a Software Engineer here in Bristol, UK, and the chance to work on cutting-edge technology is incredible. The teams are packed with super smart people, and it's a truly collaborative environment. I've learned so much, which is great for career development. Plus, the work flexibility, especially with hybrid options, really helps manage life outside of work.
Cons: Sometimes the strategic direction feels a bit less clear, which can lead to project shifts and re-prioritizing work on short notice. Internal communication about these broader shifts could definitely improve. Also, while there are lots of learning opportunities, the path for formal promotions feels a bit slow or opaque sometimes. It's typical for a fast-paced environment, but it's something that could be clearer for us.
Advice to Management: Focus on clearer, more consistent communication regarding long-term strategic goals to help teams prioritize effectively. Also, establishing more transparent and structured pathways for career progression would be beneficial for employee development.

Growth is possible, but you own it here.
Pros: You'll definitely learn a lot working on cutting-edge AI hardware. There's a chance to dive deep into machine learning and truly innovative IPU technology. If you're proactive as a software engineer, you can find exciting projects.
Cons: Formal career growth for engineering roles isn't super clear sometimes. It's tough to see a defined path, especially if you're not constantly asking. Mentorship for development is pretty hit or miss in the Bristol office.
Advice to Management: Establish clearer career ladders for all engineering roles. More robust mentorship programs would greatly help software engineers see their future here.

Great tech, but growth can be foggy
Pros: You get to work on cutting-edge AI hardware and IPU technology, which is awesome for learning new skills. As a Machine Learning Engineer, there's always something new to dive into. Colleagues in the Bristol office are super smart too.
Cons: Career progression isn't well-defined at all. It's tough to see a clear path for vertical movement, especially for senior AI/ML roles. There's not much transparency around promotions in this startup environment.
Advice to Management: Please create and communicate clearer career development plans and promotion criteria for all engineering roles. We need to know what we're working towards.

Tough Times for AI Hardware Careers
Pros: The tech itself is really interesting; you get to work on cutting-edge AI hardware. The engineering teams are super smart, especially in the Bristol office. You definitely learn a lot if you're into complex semiconductor industry challenges.
Cons: Job security is a major concern here, and it's been getting worse. There have been multiple rounds of layoffs impacting many roles, including for us hardware engineers. It's hard to feel settled when you constantly hear about people being let go, making career growth feel blocked.
Advice to Management: Management really needs to provide more transparency and a clearer long-term vision. The constant uncertainty around company direction and job security is draining. Prioritize your existing talent and communicate difficult news better to retain the good people you have left.

Great Tech, But Job Security Is Rough
Pros: I loved working on cutting-edge AI chip development as a Software Engineer. The team in the Bristol office was really smart and dedicated. We had a pretty solid hybrid work setup before things got tricky.
Cons: The biggest issue is definitely job security. There were multiple rounds of layoffs, which really hurt morale. It felt like the company was struggling to find its footing in the competitive semiconductor industry.
Advice to Management: Be more transparent about the company's financial health and future plans. Communicate tough decisions better, especially when it impacts so many people in this deep tech company.

Pay and Benefits Are Just Okay
Pros: The pension scheme is pretty solid, better than some other startups. You get good private healthcare too, which is a nice perk in the UK. For a company in the AI hardware space, the stock options were a potential upside.
Cons: Salaries, especially for software engineer roles in the Bristol office, felt a bit below market rate when compared to larger tech companies. I've seen better base pay for similar AI chip development roles. It can be tough to negotiate salary increases.
Advice to Management: Consider reviewing the base salary ranges for key engineering roles to stay competitive. It's tough to attract and retain top talent in the AI semiconductor industry if pay isn't aligned with market rates.

Career Growth is Pretty Stalled at Graphcore
Pros: I've learned a lot technically working on challenging AI hardware projects. The teams in the Bristol office are full of smart folks. There's a decent amount of cross-functional learning if you seek it out.
Cons: For a Software Engineer, formal career growth paths just aren't clear. Promotions are rare, and opportunities to lead new machine learning development initiatives are hard to come by. It feels more like a place to deepen your current skill set than to advance your career quickly.
Advice to Management: Please define clearer career progression paths for engineering roles. More opportunities for internal mobility and leadership training would help retain talent in this competitive UK tech scene.

Pay is okay, benefits need work
Pros: The base salary for a Software Engineer felt fair, especially for a startup in the AI accelerators space. You get stock options, which is common in chip design, though their value is uncertain. The private health insurance was a solid perk.
Cons: The stock options take a long time to vest, which isn't ideal for a fast-paced startup. The bonus potential was pretty low, and it felt like pay raises weren't keeping up with inflation or industry standards for machine learning engineers. Other benefits weren't super competitive.
Advice to Management: Management should really look at improving the overall benefits package, not just the base salary. Better bonus structures and faster vesting for stock options could really help attract and retain top talent for these critical AI hardware roles.

Interesting tech, but watch your career path
Pros: It's cool working on actual AI hardware. You learn a ton from really smart Software Engineers. Exposure to cutting-edge IPU technology is a big plus here in the Bristol office.
Cons: Career progression isn't always super clear for individual contributors. Sometimes you get stuck on niche projects, which limits broader skill development. It's not a big tech company with clear promotion ladders.
Advice to Management: Establish clearer career progression paths for individual contributors. Offer more cross-functional project opportunities to help employees broaden their skills.
